  • Trip to Far North Queensland

Just got back from a 5500 km/ 4 week camping holiday with the family. Been fine tuning the setup for a while but we are real happy with it now.

Our route included - Deepwater NP, Byfield NP, Cape Hillsborough N.P, Girringun N.P, Daintree / Cape Trib up to Wujal Wajul.
Our goal for this trip was to get to Wujal Wujal, at the end of the Bloomfield track. We stayed mainly in National Parks up the east coast of Qld, only staying at Caravan Parks to shower/laundry.

    Had an absolute blast.

Mods to the Fortuner so far include: -
TJM XGS suspension with 2" lift
    Polyair Air Bags to rear
    TJM snorkel
Dual batteries - 70 Ah for Fridge/lights etc
    Hankook Dynapro ATMs
Drifta Rear Drawers with fridge slide
    Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform
    Adventure Kings Awning
    Toyota Bull Bar and Towbar

Tent is a Coleman 10 Man Darkroom instant up. Seriously cool tent. Goes up and down in 5 minutes and worked real well for 4wd touring.

    Touring Setup
On the Pioneer rack - Tent, Small Rhino Rack Bag with Sleeping Gear, Dry bags up center with Pillows, and Gas bottle. Plus shovel, Treds, and Awning.

In the car - Everyone had a "packing cell" http://www.kathmandu.com.au/travel/p...lls-cases.html for clothes.
These were great as they were able to be stuffed into voids around the big items.
Additionally I built a Kitchen box that had all cooking gear/stove in it. This fitted perfectly into the space. this also doubles up as a kitchen bench / table for prep as it as removable legs.
Water was kept in 2 10 L water containers that were tied down in the foot wells.

Favourite piece of gear? I've got 2. Pioneer Platform is amazing. Can chuck anything on it, and it is so well made. Not cheap, but real quality gear. Other piece of gear is the Drifta drawer setup. These drawers are awesome. Worked so well for touring, are removable if I need to convert back to a 7 seater. Has a fridge slide, 2 drawers and and slide out table/bench. Works so well. DRIFTA Rocks.

Byfield NP was my favourite for sure. Lots of sand driving, and had to get up "Big Sandy", a large sand dune that was quite a challenge.
Didn't get bogged so I must have done something right! Tyre Pressures were critical here, sand was very soft, momentum was your friend.

Will post more pics if there is interest.
    Cheers

you mean the PDR ? main road to the Cape? I did it in a standard Tuna last year its just a long dirt road ,some of it badly corrugated , which is progressively being sealed. From Laura i think it was about 500k of dirt , and there is less now . We are going again late July this year.
