Time to start documenting the build of our 2016 Toyota Fortuner GX (Manual).

This will be the third vehicle I have modified for offroad use, so buying the bare bones GX model made a lot of sense. With a growing young family who love touring and camping as much as me we wanted something that could handle all our gear whilst cruising with some mod cons and plenty of space. Our past dual cab, whilst tricked out with all the bits and bobs, didn't really suit us. Aesthetics wise it was where I wanted it but I couldn't justify upgrading to a full blown canopy setup when space was becoming so dire in the back seats. There is quite a lot of aftermarket gear I could pilfer to get this build up and running but this time around I am happy to spend a little more, wait a little longer, and get this build set up just right for our family.

Most members have already done most of what I was thinking of doing so I thank them for paving the way and making my quest a little easier. This won't be a ground breaking build, but what I hope to offer is a little insight into the importance of aesthetics, a few mod tricks and tips and a decent contribution to the forum. Most on the fly stuff will be captured on my instagram account @citygonebad, but any addition to the vehicle, no matter how minor, will be added here... Along with my thoughts, my time in the seat and my real world driving experiences.

First two weeks of ownership has been good, rides a little lower than its 18" brethren on stock steelies, yet is pretty compliant considering. Danced in snow traffic and was very impressed with fourth gear (and the power button). This is a daily so averaging 9.2l in eco mode stop start traffic, quite happy toddling along but the mod bug is beginning to bite. As the GX came basically stock as a rock (did come with a tow pack though, bonus) its time to start with the small stuff...

Bit of bartering got a OEM Tinted Bonnet Protector thrown in at time of purchase, the brackets on this were kind of perplexing and I guess an homologation off of a Hilux model. Didn't like the look of the Toyota Weather Shields so sourced some tinted ones off evilbay, nice and dark and arrived undamaged. Tip for young players, heat up 3M tape before install using a heat gun, then remove the tape backing and heat again slightly before installing (No need for adhesive promoters, ever).

As there was a bit of scuffing on the rear bumper from its previous fleet life I looked online for some sort of bumper trim and was surprised there was no OEM version. Sourced one with a few bells and whistles and ended up having to modify it by removing a section so it could fit around tow protector. At some stage there will possibly be a rear bar but until then this should help the camping shuffle. Also sourced a generic rubber mat and cut to suit, something to start to protect the carpet anyway before we move into building the cargo area.

As vehicle arrived stock its next addition will be window tinting with an additional privacy screen.

    More on that later...

Thanks Frazza, torn daily about Nebula Blue but black and blue grows on you... the bumper trim looks off centre in that photo so had to go and check lol.

Those weathersheild's look like my stock toyota one. There are two types, the slimline (which is what you have) and the ugly big ones like you see on Taxi's.

Ahh... I need a parts number list!

Bet they are most probably identical too, which is a good thing. Interesting enough dandin I found some OEM slimline ones online from a parts seller last night, about twice the price too.

Lots of cheap looking slimlines around?

Mine was fitted at delivery, so unfortunately, I'll have a dig around for part numbers. I'll take a picture of what they look like.

I have the same ebay tinted weathershields , i found they were good but they created a massive blind spot just above the drivers mirror . I trimmed off about 40mm which helps.

Ok, sold the dual cab so time to start spending some cash.

Bit the bullet on the following today:

TJM Signature T15 alloy Bar, TJM Torq 9500lb S/rope winch and TJM 4000 XGS Heavy Duty Suspension (45-50mm).

Little bit different to what I would normally do (Alloy bar over steel) but love the shape and read good things about the suspension.

Going Heavy Duty in rear 215kg with an aim of having laden draws permanently and laden loads more often (Cheap to reverse considering).

After getting quotes from both big mobs went TJM due to most products slightly cheaper and some good recommendations.

The service from TJM has been fantastic so far, hope they keep it up!

Happy days, next 3 weeks (Subject to HD front suspension availability).

Shorteebro02, just looked and exact one no longer listed unfortunately. The Thai listed ones look very similar, couple look identical apart from size of logo etc. Cost a bit more but im sure would be ok.

This link should get you the traders name:

                            Bar is now being powdercoated

Satin Black all the way, solves a lot of problems from my end in regards to aesthetics etc.

Awesome, big thanks to @tjmbrendale on YouTube for being supportive and even phoning my local dealer to offer advice.
